Site Prep and Grading in Pittsburgh, PA

A level spot on a Pittsburgh lot is usually something you build, with a cut, compacted fill and often a wall. We plan the slope and the water before the first bucket.

Site prep in Pittsburgh almost always means working on a slope. Before we cut, we look at where the hill drains, what is holding up the ground above and below, and whether the lot was filled when the street went in. Cuts into a hillside may need a wall or a stepped bench, and fill on a slope has to be keyed in and compacted in thin lifts so it does not slide.

The clay here is fine when it is dry and slick when it is wet, and the weathered shale under it can soften once it is exposed to rain. We strip and stockpile topsoil, keep the work area drained while we dig, and cover bare slopes quickly. Water is never left to pond at the top of a cut or behind fresh fill.

Pennsylvania DEP rules require erosion and sediment control on every earth disturbance, a written plan once it reaches 5,000 square feet, and a stormwater permit at one acre. In practice that means silt fence or filter sock, a stone entrance to keep mud off the street, and seed and mulch as soon as each area is finished. We set those controls before the first bucket of soil moves.

Site prep & grading in Pittsburgh: common questions

Can you level part of my sloped yard?

Often, yes. A level area on a hillside usually takes a cut, some fill and a retaining wall to hold the difference. We look at the slope and the drainage before we say how.

Why does fill on my slope keep sinking?

Usually because it was dumped, not compacted in layers, or it was placed on wet clay. Loose fill on a slope settles and can slide.

Do I need an erosion plan for a small job?

Every disturbance needs basic erosion control. A written plan is required at 5,000 square feet, and your municipality may ask for one sooner.

They excavated and prepared the base for a new shed. The ground feels solid and no longer slopes toward the fence.
