On a steep drive, water does the damage. We build a firm stone base, shed the runoff to the side and add cross drains or culverts where the drive needs them.
Driveways around Pittsburgh are often steep, short and squeezed between a wall and the house. On a steep drive, water picks up speed and carries gravel or undermines pavement, so the base and the drainage matter more than the surface. We dig out to firm ground, build a compacted stone base and set grades so water leaves the drive before it reaches the garage.
On larger lots in the outer townships, gravel drives and lanes climb long hills. Those need a crown or cross slope, ditches along the uphill side, and culverts where the drive crosses a swale or stream. Without them, a single heavy storm can cut a gully down the middle of the drive. Steep sections may also need a paved or concrete strip where gravel will not stay.
The apron where a drive meets the street is in the public right-of-way, and the city, township or state road owner sets the rules for cutting the curb or crossing a ditch. We confirm the permit before we cut. We also remove old asphalt and concrete drives and prepare the base for new paving. State roads need a PennDOT highway occupancy permit for a new or changed drive.
Driveways & roads in Pittsburgh: common questions
How do I stop gravel washing down my steep driveway?
Shape the drive so water runs off the side, add water bars or a drain to turn the flow, and use crushed stone that locks together.
Does my drive need a culvert?
If it crosses a roadside ditch or a swale, usually yes. The road owner sets the size and permit.
Can you widen a driveway into the hillside?
Often, with a cut and a retaining wall. We check the slope and the permit rules first.
